A storyboard is an essential tool in the filmmaking process. It allows you to visualize your film even before it’s made. It is essentially your blueprint that will help you identify shot sequencing, transitional moments, coverage and sound. It’s also a great collaboration tool that will help you stay focused and on track. Also, a good storyboard will give your editor a great foundation on which to generate the first cut.
Now these are just a few of the reasons why storyboards are necessary for the filmmaking process. And despite what you may think, you don’t need to be an artist to create a good storyboard. Stick figures are perfectly viable. The important thing here is that you are mindful of your shooting process and you have enough in the can to make a great edit and an amazing film.
